The Myths of Woodburning

There has been a lot of bad press in recent years about the burning of wood, so we thought we would try and bust a few myths about them:

  • Burning wood is still much better for the environment than using gas or electricity.
  • Wood produces 0.008kg of CO2 per kwh versus gas at 0.198kg and electricity at 0.517kg.
  • Wood burning stoves produce fewer emissions than previously thought. New data from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has cut the estimated proportion of small particulate pollution produced by wood burning stoves from 38% to 17%!
  • One myth often quoted is that wood burners ‘create the same number of emissions as 18 diesel cars. This comes from test results interpreted by the Air Quality Expert Group (AQEG), it’s thought this comparison is extremely misleading. One expert saying it is like comparing “apples with oranges.”
  • At Urban Forestry (Bury St Edmunds) Ltd. we plant more trees than we fell. This means we can legitimately claim the wood we sell is truly sustainable!
